Participants select two out of four different workshops on construction techniques.

We will explore and test the building potential of earth blocks in contemporary architecture and design. Through theoretical inputs and practical experimentation participants will go through a creative process of learning by doing.

Rammed Earth

The workshop will be organised as an ongoing construction site where we will build a wall on the Campus Kuchl. It will cover a range of topics from material composition to formwork construction and finishing.

Earth + Fibres

By experimenting with the nature and length of different fibres, the quality and composition of the soil, and changes in water content, we will show how these parameters can influence the design, construction, and aesthetics of earth building.

Straw + Reed

You will have the opportunity to learn hands-on what lies behind the beautiful exterior of a thatched roof and how straw walls are constructed. You will understand the process of thatching and the secrets behind a longlasting construction based on fibres.

Workshops

on different construction techniques

Each workshop takes place twice during the two summer school weeks.
Each workshop lasts 4.5 days and will take place twice during summer school.
Participants choose one workshop for the first week and one for the second week.
The group size is between 20 and max. 25 people.
During the workshop, several samples and elements are built on site, ranging from tests to real scale.
After your successful registration, we will ask you for your preferences regarding the choice of workshops, and we will allocate participants to topics.
There will be time for exchange between the four workshops and you will gain an insight into the different techniques.
